This 5-month program is designed to help you integrate Nonviolent Communication into your leadership style to maximize your effectiveness.

In this course you will develop skills that support:

• Increased sense of trust in your own abilities to connect, influence and lead

• Mutual trust with those you are working with

• Inspiring others to join you in creating the world in which you want to live

• Improved ability to articulate and convey what matters most

• Creativity and cooperation

• Team learning, trust, connection and honesty

• Eliciting useful feedback

Inner-outer congruence is key to being an effective leader. When your vision emerges from a place of deep presence and purpose, and strategies are in alignment with values, then trust is built and power is created with other people. Nonviolent Communication (NVC) can support the development of inner-outer congruence.

Much more than a communication model, NVC is an integration of consciousness, language, thought, communication and strategies of influence. When understood at all these levels, NVC gives rise to power and possibility that can transform our effectiveness in the world.

This program will move you toward greater effectiveness in influencing and leading those you work with whether it be in families, community organizations, educational institutions, political entities or large corporations.

The first class of each month will focus on learning and applying NVC at the levels of:

• Consciousness/intention - the motivation behind the mechanics

• Language - software for our thoughts

• Thinking - core beliefs we hold about the world

• Communication - choices and ways our message is sent without language

• Strategies of Influence - how we influence others in alignment with our values

The second class each month will include discussion on a book from the following list:

Presence: An Exploration of Profound Change in People, Organizations, and Society- Peter Senge, C.Otto Scharmer, Joseph Jaworski, Betty Sue Flowers

Synchronicity: The Inner Path of Leadership - Joseph Jaworski

Leadership and the New Science - Margaret Wheatley

Practicing Servant Leadership: Succeeding through Trust, Bravery and Forgiveness - Larry Spears and Michele Lawrence, editors

Theory U: Leading From the Future as It Emerges - C. Otto Scharmer

Participants are asked to purchase books on their own.

Course outline:
January:

Consciousness/intention- Truly the heart and core of NVC, explore how the consciousness of interdependence, compassion, and partnership shapes our involvement in living systems (personal and social), creating choices supporting health of the whole planet. Book: Presence: An Exploration of Profound Change in People, Organizations, and Society- Peter Senge, C.Otto Scharmer, Joseph Jaworski, Betty Sue Flowers

February:

Language- As software for our thoughts, language plays an important role in shaping our intentions and expressing our deepest values to others. Explore language that’s congruent with your values and likely to connect with the values held by others. Book: Synchronicity: The Inner Path of Leadership- Joseph Jaworski

March:

Thinking- Take a look at core beliefs we hold about the world, the key role thoughts play in our reactions and responses, and the outcomes of the assumptions and frameworks that create our paradigms. Consider shifts in thinking that may be more congruent with your intentions. Book: Leadership and the New Science- Margaret Wheatley

April:

Communication- Exploration of the ways our messages are sent without language. The role “choice” plays in our communication will be an emphasis as well as the ways consciousness is displayed beyond the words we use. Book: Practicing Servant Leadership: Succeeding through Trust, Bravery and Forgiveness- Larry Spears and Michele Lawrence, editors

May:

Strategies of Influence- This area is critical to realizing our visions. How do we influence others in alignment with our values? How can we inspire others to join us in creating a world that restores health and wholeness to the planet? Book: Theory U: Leading From the Future as It Emerges- C. Otto Scharmer
